Tauranga is a city in the Bay of Plenty on New Zealand's North Island, with 152,844 people at the 2023 census, the fifth-largest city in the country. A cruise port guide says ships dock in the cargo port area at Mount Maunganui, across the harbor from downtown Tauranga, which is about 7 km (4 miles) away, with a taxi ride of around 10 minutes. Mini vans and car rentals are available at the dock.

Top 3 things to do
1. Mauao (Mount Maunganui)
A cone-shaped headland 232 m (761 feet) high, open to the public all year, popular to walk around or hike up. From the top you can see a good stretch of coast each way and the Kaimai Range to the west.
Tip: A cruise port guide says the Mount Maunganui attractions are within easy walking distance of the terminal.

2. The beaches at Mount Maunganui
The town has a harbor beach (Pilot Bay) and an ocean beach with surf a short distance apart. A cruise port guide says both are a short walk from the terminal.
Tip: Wikipedia says parts of the ocean beach are notoriously dangerous, so the harbor side is the gentle one.

3. Rotorua and Te Puia
Rotorua is known for geysers and hot mud pools. Te Puia covers 70 hectares in the Whakarewarewa valley and has the Pohutu Geyser, mud pools, hot springs and the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute. A cruise port guide puts Rotorua about 80 to 86 km (48 to 53 miles) from the port.
Tip: The same guide says a day trip needs planning because of the distance. Our sources give no drive time, so book a tour that guarantees the return to the ship.

Swimming on the ocean beach without care
Wikipedia says that although the ocean beach at Mount Maunganui is known for good surfing, parts of it are notoriously dangerous. The harbor beach is the gentle one.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
