What a back-to-back actually is
A back-to-back cruise is two or more sailings booked consecutively so that the second begins the day the first ends. Royal Caribbean calls the people doing it consecutive cruisers. You do not pack, you do not fly home, and in most cases you do not even change cabins. The ship turns around, a few thousand people leave, a few thousand new ones arrive, and you stay put.
The reason it is worth doing is rarely just the extra time. Two 7-night sailings are frequently priced below one 14-night sailing on the same ship, each leg can carry its own promotion, and each leg can carry its own casino offer. That last point is the whole game for Club Royale players: an offer covers a sailing, so the only way to spend several offers on one trip is to chain the sailings together.

- The night before, you get a letter with a meeting time and place, usually a bar or the theatre.
- In the morning you leave your bags in the cabin. Consecutive cruisers do not pack.
- You gather at the meeting point, typically between 9 and 10am, and wait for the ship to clear.
- You walk off as a group with an escort and clear customs. At US ports this is a legal requirement even though you are getting straight back on. It takes minutes.
- You reboard, often before the new passengers, and the ship is briefly, gloriously empty.
- You do the muster drill again, because maritime law counts each sailing as a separate voyage.

Do you have to get off the ship between back-to-back cruises?
At US ports, yes, briefly. Customs and Border Protection requires every passenger to be processed on turnaround day, so consecutive cruisers gather in a lounge, walk off together, clear customs in a few minutes, and walk straight back on. You do not pack, and you are usually back aboard before new passengers board. At non-US ports the process varies, but it is generally similar.
Can you keep the same cabin on a back-to-back cruise?
Often, but it is not automatic. Because the two legs are separate reservations, you need to book the same stateroom on both, then ask Royal Caribbean to link the bookings as a consecutive cruise. If you cannot keep the cabin, your stateroom attendant moves your hanging clothes to the new room on turnaround morning.

Can back-to-back cruises be on different ships?
