Skagen: when your ship stops here

The northernmost point of Denmark where two seas meet, a museum of the painters who loved the light, and a church buried in sand.

Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Skagen is the northernmost town in Denmark, at the top of Jutland, 41 km (25 miles) north of Frederikshavn, with 7,250 people in January 2026. It was a fishing village in the Middle Ages and is still Denmark's main fishing port. Wikipedia says its harbour is being enlarged to take larger ships, especially cruise ships.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Grenen

The headland at the northernmost point of Denmark, where the North Sea and the Baltic Sea meet. Wikipedia says that because of their different densities a clear dividing line can be seen.

Tip: Our sources give no walking time from the harbour, so ask on board.

  2. 2. Skagens Museum and the Skagen Painters

In the late 1800s a group of Scandinavian artists came every summer, drawn by the light, the fishermen and the scenery. The museum was founded in 1908 in the dining room of Brondums Hotel, by painters including Michael Ancher, P.S. Kroyer and Laurits Tuxen.

Tip: Our sources give no opening hours, so check them for your day.

  3. 3. The Sand-Covered Church

The old village church from the 14th century, known as the Sand-Covered Church because only its tower can still be seen. Sand drifting in from Rabjerg Mile began burying it around 1600, and the church was closed by royal decree in 1795.

Tip: The new Skagen Church from 1841 stands in the town. Our sources give no distance to the old tower.

What to skip

  • Rabjerg Mile on a short call

The enormous migratory dune is one of two that remain in the area. Our sources give no travel time from the harbour, so leave it for a long call.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
