Roseau is the capital of Dominica, with 14,725 people at the 2011 census. A cruise port guide says ships use the Roseau cruise ship berth, a dedicated pier near downtown, and that the street beside it has an outdoor market, shops and restaurants.

Top 3 things to do
1. The old town
Roseau's streets originally ran out from what is now the Old Market. The British built Fort Young in 1770, the French captured it in 1778, and it is now the Fort Young Hotel. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Fair Haven is a Catholic church in Gothic and Romanesque revival style.
Tip: The downtown farmers market is on the same streets; Wikipedia gives no opening times, so ask at the berth.

2. The Botanic Gardens and Morne Bruce
The gardens lie at the base of Morne Bruce, on the edge of the central district, and many residents come on Sunday afternoons to escape the heat. Morne Bruce looks over downtown, the Woodbridge Bay port to the north, the gardens and the Caribbean Sea.
Tip: It is a good first stop for the view, with the town walk after.

3. Trafalgar Falls
Trafalgar is a village in the interior to the north east of Roseau, near Morne Trois Pitons, best known for the falls, which are a growing destination for nature tourism.
Tip: Our sources give no distance or driving time, so book it as a tour or taxi with a return time agreed.

What to skip
Boiling Lake on a short call
The lake is a water-filled fumarole with water at 82 to 92 degrees C (180 to 197 degrees F) near the edge, in Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a World Heritage Site since 1997 that covers about 7,000 hectares (17,000 acres) and also holds the Valley of Desolation with its boiling mud ponds. Our sources give no hike time or distance from the pier, so plan it only if the ship's tour desk gives you both.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
