Athens (Piraeus): when your ship stops here
The Acropolis early, the museum under it, the old lanes of Plaka, all by one metro line from the port; the temple on the cape is too far.
Facts checked Nov 2, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.
Ships for Athens dock at Piraeus, the port city 8 km (5 miles) south west of the centre of Athens. The Piraeus Port Authority runs three cruise terminals, A, B and C; Terminal B, built in 2013, takes the biggest ships. The Piraeus metro station is next to the port, at the end of Line 1, which runs to Thissio and Monastiraki at the foot of the Acropolis. If you would rather stay in Piraeus, the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, with its great bronzes, is a 5 minute walk from the cruise area.

Top 3 things to do
1. The Acropolis and the Parthenon
The rock rises 150 m (490 feet) above the sea, about 3 hectares (7.4 acres) on top, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The Parthenon, the temple of Athena, was built from 447 to 438 BC, 69.5 by 30.9 m (228 by 101 feet). Since September 2023 entry is by timed slot, at most 20,000 people a day, with 3,000 in the first hour from 8 to 9.
Tip: Book the earliest slot before your cruise. In the heat of July 2025 the site shut from 1 to 5 in the afternoon, so the morning is the time anyway.

2. The Acropolis Museum
Opened on 20 June 2009, 280 m (310 yards) from the rock, it shows more than 4,250 objects found on the Acropolis over 14,000 square metres of floor. You walk over glass floors above the excavated streets below, and the top floor holds the Parthenon sculptures in daylight, with glass walls on all four sides.
Tip: Do the museum after the rock, in the cool, when you know what you are looking at.

3. Plaka and Monastiraki
Plaka is the oldest district of Athens, on the north east slope of the Acropolis between Syntagma and Monastiraki square, lived in without a break since the Stone Age: narrow winding streets and neoclassical houses. Monastiraki is a stop on metro Line 1, straight from Piraeus.
Tip: Eat lunch here, in a lane, not on the square. Then the same line takes you back to the ship.
What to skip
Cape Sounion on a port day
The Temple of Poseidon, built 444 to 440 BC on the cape, is 69.5 km (43.1 miles) south east of Athens. It is famous for its sunset, which a ship never sees.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
