Cozumel is an island in the Mexican Caribbean, about 19 km (12 miles) off the mainland. Cruise ships come in at three piers: Punta Langosta, Puerta Maya and the International Pier.

Top 3 things to do
1. Snorkel or dive the reefs
Cozumel is counted among the best places in the world to scuba dive. A large part of the reef on the south side of the island is a national park.
Tip: Look, never touch. The park rules forbid touching or taking any sea life, and the corals are alive.

2. Chankanaab park
A lagoon, a beach and a reef in one park, with statues under the water you can see when you snorkel, and a sea lion show. The park says to allow about 4 hours.
Tip: It is about 10 minutes by car from Puerta Maya, 15 from the International Pier and 30 from Punta Langosta. It is closed on Sundays unless a Sunday opening is announced.

3. San Gervasio, the Maya city
The most important Maya settlement on Cozumel, its parts joined by raised roads called sacbes. Tradition links it with pilgrims to Ixchel, a Maya goddess of the moon, childbirth and weaving.
Tip: It is about 45 minutes from the piers, with no public transport and no water for sale inside, so bring your own. The buildings may not be climbed.
What to skip
Punta Sur on a short day in port
The park at the island's southern tip has a lighthouse, a lagoon, a beach and a navigation museum. It suggests about 6 hours for a visit and is about 40 minutes from the piers, so it does not fit a short stop. It is closed on Sundays unless a Sunday opening is announced.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
