Naples: when your ship stops here
Pompeii by train, the old town and a real Neapolitan pizza, or a boat to Capri; not two of them in one day.

Naples is one of the oldest cities in Europe, founded by the Greeks, on the bay below Mount Vesuvius. Almost the whole of its historic centre, about 1,021 hectares, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, and the art of the Neapolitan pizza maker is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage (2017).

Top 3 things to do
1. Pompeii
The Roman town buried under 4 to 6 metres (13 to 20 feet) of ash and pumice when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The site covers 64 to 67 hectares (about 165 acres) and gets about 2.5 million visitors a year. From Naples, the Circumvesuviana train from Porta Nolana or Garibaldi stops at Pompei Scavi, at the main entrance.
Tip: The site is huge. Pick a few streets and houses rather than trying to see it all.

2. The old town and a pizza
The historic centre goes back to the first Greek settlement in the 8th century BC. Castel Nuovo, by the port, is one of the city's top landmarks; a pope resigned in one of its halls in 1294. A true Neapolitan pizza is Margherita or marinara, shaped by hand and baked for 60 to 90 seconds in a wood oven at 485 C (905 F).
Tip: The old town is a walk from the port, and the pizza is everywhere in it.

3. Capri
The island of Capri lies off the tip of the Sorrento peninsula. Boats leave Naples from Molo Beverello and Calata di Massa and arrive at Marina Grande, where a funicular climbs to Capri town and its Piazzetta. Above it, Anacapri sits on the slopes of Monte Solaro, 589 m (1,932 feet) high, with a chairlift to the top. The famous Blue Grotto is a sea cave you enter lying flat in a small rowing boat through an opening about 1 metre (3 feet) high.
Tip: The grotto can be entered only when the sea is calm and the tide is low, so do not count on it.
What to skip
Pompeii and Capri on the same day
Each is its own trip out of the city, one by train and one by boat, and Pompeii alone covers more than 60 hectares. Choose one and see it properly; the other is a reason to come back.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
