Mykonos is a Greek island in the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea. Its main town on the west coast is called Chora, which simply means Town. Strong winds blow here so often that its nickname is the Island of the Winds; in summer the cool meltemi wind keeps the days pleasant.

Top 3 things to do
1. Chora and Little Venice
In Chora, the rows of old fishing houses called Little Venice hang their wooden balconies over the sea; the first were built in the middle of the 1700s. People gather here to watch the sun go down. Nearby is Panagia Paraportiani, a whitewashed church begun in the 1400s and finished in the 1600s, one of the most photographed in the world.
Tip: The lanes are narrow and the paving is smooth; wear shoes with grip.

2. The windmills
Seven windmills stand in a row on the hill above Chora, the first thing you see from the harbour. Venetian builders put up most of the island's 16 windmills in the 1500s to grind wheat with the strong north winds. One has been made into a museum.
Tip: They are a short walk from Little Venice, so see both together.
3. Delos, the sacred island
The small island of Delos, only 2 km (1.2 miles) from Mykonos, was famous in ancient times as the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. On the Terrace of the Lions, seven of the original marble lions remain, set there before 600 BC. Tour boats go there regularly from Mykonos.
Tip: The whole island is an archaeological site. Give it half a day and get back to the boat in good time.

What to skip
A rented quad bike
The British government's travel advice for Greece says people suffer serious injury and even death every year in quad bike accidents, that you share the roads with larger and faster vehicles, that helmets are required, and that many insurance policies count quad biking as an extreme sport and exclude it. Take the bus, a taxi or a tour instead.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
