Victoria: when your ship stops here

The Inner Harbour on foot, Butchart Gardens, and the park with the 127 foot totem pole; the castle shuts at 4:30.

Facts checked Nov 1, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Victoria is the capital of British Columbia, at the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Ships tie up at Ogden Point, the busiest cruise port of call in Canada with 311 calls in 2025, usually the last stop before a ship goes back to Seattle or Vancouver. Downtown is about a 30 minute walk, or a shuttle bus ride, and the 800 m breakwater beside the terminal, painted with the First Nations Unity Wall mural, is a walk in itself.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The Inner Harbour: Parliament, the Empress and the museum

The British Columbia Parliament Buildings, finished in 1897 to the design of 25 year old Francis Rattenbury, face the harbour with a gilded statue of Captain George Vancouver on the dome; free guided tours run all year, and the buildings are lit up at dusk. Diagonally across stands the Empress hotel, opened in 1908. Between the two is the Royal BC Museum, founded in 1886, with its First Peoples gallery, a life size Old Town of Victoria from the 1870s to the 1920s and a woolly mammoth.

Tip: All three are a few steps apart on Belleville Street, so this is the walk for a short call.

  2. 2. Butchart Gardens

In Brentwood Bay, north of the city: 22 hectares (54 acres) of gardens begun by Jennie Butchart in her husband's worked out limestone quarry. The Sunken Garden was finished in 1921, the Italian Garden in 1926 and the Rose Garden, 2,500 plants of 280 kinds, in 1929. A National Historic Site of Canada since 2004, with over a million visitors a year.

Tip: It is out of town, so it is a tour or a taxi, and the gates keep seasonal hours (in November 2026, 10 am to 4:30 pm). Check them against your ship's hours before you go.

  3. 3. Beacon Hill Park

75 hectares (190 acres) of park, set aside in 1858, with the Story Pole carved from one cedar by Chief Mungo Martin, his son David and Henry Hunt: 38.8 m (127 feet), the tallest totem pole in the world when it went up in 1956. Mile 0 of the Trans-Canada Highway is at the park's south west corner, and there is a petting zoo in summer.

Tip: It is a big park: pick the Story Pole and Mile 0 and leave the rest.

What to skip

  • Craigdarroch Castle on a late call

The 1890 mansion of coal baron Robert Dunsmuir, 37 rooms and a tower reached by 87 steps, is a fine museum, but it opens only Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 4:30 pm, and a ship that comes in late finds it shut. Check the clock before you set off.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
