Cabo Rojo: when your ship stops here

A new pier at the empty end of the Dominican Republic: an 8 km beach by boat, flamingos on a salt lake, a mountain lookout; no town at the pier.

Facts checked Nov 2, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Cabo Rojo, the Red Cape, is at the far south west tip of the Dominican Republic, in Pedernales Province on the border with Haiti. The cruise port was built by the Dominican Port Authority (APORDOM) and took its first ship in January 2024; Royal Caribbean's first call was Adventure of the Seas on 16 October 2024, and the port is built for the biggest ships afloat and up to 15,000 visitors a day. Everything around it is Jaragua National Park, 1,374 square km (531 square miles), the largest protected area in the Caribbean.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Bahia de las Aguilas, Eagle Bay

An 8 km (5 mile) beach inside the national park, utterly isolated, about 25 km from Pedernales, the nearest town. The sea floor is clean coral reef, and hawksbill, leatherback and green turtles depend on it. You get there from the village of La Cueva, on the cape itself, by small motorboat, on foot or in a four wheel drive, and villagers can be hired to take you.

Tip: The beach is utterly isolated: carry water, shade and food, and settle the boat back before you set out, not on the sand.

  2. 2. Laguna de Oviedo and its flamingos

A salt lake of about 25 square km just off highway 44, saltier than the sea, with small islands where rhinoceros iguanas live. American flamingos feed here, most of them in the northern winter, some all year. Boat tours run from about one hour to three and a half.

Tip: Bring binoculars: the birds keep their distance and the boats keep theirs too.

  3. 3. Hoyo de Pelempito, the lookout

A hole in the mountains that drops 700 m (2,300 feet) from a lookout at about 1,300 m (4,265 feet). The drive up is near 32 km (20 miles) and the plants change from desert cactus to pine to cloud forest on the way. At noon it can be 25 degrees C (77 F); in the early morning it can be freezing.

Tip: Take a jacket. It is a long drive for a view, so it suits a long call, not a short one.

What to skip

  • Walking off to find a town

There is none at the pier. The nearest town is Pedernales, a border town founded in 1927 with a crossing to Anse-a-Pitres in Haiti, and the only place on the cape itself is the little village of La Cueva. This is a beach and nature stop. Plan around a boat or a tour, and keep the all aboard time in mind on every road.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
