Kristiansand: when your ship stops here

Norway's biggest zoo, the longest run of wooden houses in the north, and a city beach.

Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Kristiansand is a city on the south coast of Norway, with 67,920 people in 2025. A cruise port guide says ships dock at a dedicated pier, that a second pier opened in May 2017 for the largest ships, and that downtown is within easy walking distance. It also says a road train carries cruise passengers around the city. Do not mix it up with Kristiansund, a different port on the west coast.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park

The largest zoo in Norway, just east of the city, with over 900,000 visitors every year.

Tip: Our sources give no travel time from the pier, so ask on board.

  2. 2. Posebyen

An old district in the grid of streets called Kvadraturen. Wikipedia says it has the longest continuous wooden buildings in Northern Europe.

Tip: It is in the center, so it is the part of the city that fits a short call.

  3. 3. The fortress and the cathedral

Christiansholm Fortress dates from 1672 and stands toward the east harbor. Kristiansand Cathedral, from 1885, is the largest church in the city and holds 1,500 people.

Tip: Both are in the center. Our sources give no opening hours.

What to skip

  • Hamresanden on a short call

Wikipedia calls Hamresanden the longest beach in Kristiansand, 3 km, between Hanes and the airport. The city beach, Bystranda, is in the center and is the one that fits a short call.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
