Lyttelton: when your ship stops here

The port for Christchurch: a rebuilt time ball tower, a gondola over the harbor, and a volcano rim.

Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Lyttelton is a port town on the north shore of Lyttelton Harbour (Whakaraupo) on the South Island of New Zealand, with 3,123 people at the 2023 census. It is the cruise port for Christchurch, which is 12 km (7.5 miles) to the northwest through a 1.9 km road tunnel. A cruise port guide says ships dock in the inner harbor at a pier within a short walk of downtown Lyttelton, and that most cruise companies offer a free shuttle bus to the center of Christchurch. Public bus route 28 also runs to Christchurch, about 30 minutes.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Lyttelton Timeball Station

A tower erected in 1876 that was one of the five working time ball stations left in the world until the June 2011 earthquake destroyed it. The tower was rebuilt faithfully and was working again at the end of 2018.

  2. 2. Christchurch Gondola

A gondola that opened in October 1992 as the Mount Cavendish Gondola. Its course is 1,000 metres (1,100 yards) long and the summit is 445 metres (1,460 feet) above sea level. The base station is in Heathcote Valley and the route climbs the flanks of Mount Cavendish in the Port Hills.

Tip: Our sources give no ride time or travel time from the ship, so allow extra and ask your cruise line about a shuttle or tour.

  3. 3. Lyttelton Harbour and the Port Hills

The Port Hills on the north side of the harbor are the eroded remains of the extinct Banks Peninsula Volcano. Their steep crater rim acts as a natural amphitheatre around the harbor.

Tip: A cruise port guide lists Governors Bay about 10 km (6.2 miles) to the west and Sumner about 6 km (3.7 miles) to the northeast, reached through Evans Pass.

What to skip

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
