Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.
Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany after Berlin, with 1,973,896 people at the end of 2024, and the Port of Hamburg is Germany largest and Europe third largest. A cruise port guide lists four cruise terminals: HafenCity, Altona and Steinwerder, plus the small Uberseebrucke for expedition ships and yachts. HafenCity is the one in the heart of the district, 50 metres (160 feet) from a subway station. The guide puts Altona 15 minutes by public transport and Steinwerder about 20 minutes by road from the inner city.

Top 3 things to do
1. The Elbphilharmonie
A concert hall that held its official opening concert on 11 January 2017. The building reaches 108 metres (354 feet) at its western side, and its Plaza, on the 8th floor at the top of the brick section, is open to the public and reached by a curved escalator. The Great Concert Hall seats 2,100.
Tip: Our sources do not say whether the Plaza is free or when it is open, so check before you go.

2. The Speicherstadt
The largest warehouse district in the world, built from 1883 to 1927 on timber piles of oak logs, in the HafenCity quarter. It covers 26 hectares (64 acres) and became a World Heritage Site on 5 July 2015 together with the Kontorhaus District.
Tip: A cruise port guide says the HafenCity terminal is in the heart of that district, but it gives no walking time to the warehouses.

3. Miniatur Wunderland
A model railway attraction that Guinness World Records recognizes as the largest model railway system in the world. As of May 2025 it had 16,491 metres (54,104 feet) of track, and about 1,594,000 people visited in 2024.
Tip: Our sources give no ticket details or distance from the ship, so book ahead if you want to go.

What to skip
Walking everywhere from Altona or Steinwerder
A cruise port guide puts the inner city about 15 minutes by public transport from Altona and about 20 minutes by road from Steinwerder. HafenCity is the terminal closest to the sights above.
Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
