Ponta Delgada is a port city on Sao Miguel Island and the executive capital of the Azores, the Portuguese island region in the Atlantic. Sao Miguel is the largest island of the Azores, about 745 square km (288 square miles). A cruise port guide says ships dock at Ponta Delgada, on the southeastern coast, and gives no distance from the dock to town.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Sete Cidades and its twin lakes

Two small lakes in the crater of a dormant volcano, in the western third of the island, joined by a narrow strait with a bridge. They are called the Green Lake and the Blue Lake, because each side reflects the sunlight in a different color. It is the largest body of water in the Azores.

Tip: Our sources give no distance or travel time from the port, so ask your ship or a local guide before you plan around it.

  2. 2. The Vila Franca islet

A small uninhabited island, a coastal tuff cone 1,200 metres (3,900 feet) off Vila Franca do Campo, and a nature reserve since 1993. A cruise port guide says it is a popular place for cliff diving, swimming, snorkeling, boating and kayaking.

Tip: The same guide puts Vila Franca do Campo about 26 km (16 miles) east of Ponta Delgada, a drive of about 30 minutes.

  3. 3. The old town

The historic city has three parishes, Sao Pedro, Sao Sebastiao and Sao Jose. Sao Jose holds the Campo de Sao Francisco, the Church of Sao Jose and the sanctuary of the Convent of Esperanca, where the image of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres is kept. Each year the Feast of Lord Holy Christ of the Miracles is held in front of Fort Sao Bras, on the 5th Sunday of Easter.

What to skip

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
