Kumamoto: when your ship stops here
A castle with a siege story, a formal garden, and long shopping arcades downtown.

Kumamoto is the capital of Kumamoto Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan. A cruise port guide says ships dock at the Port of Yatsushiro, southwest of the city, and not at the city own port, which handles ferries and cargo. Our sources give no distance or travel time from the pier to the city. The guide says taxis are the only public transport that runs all night.

Top 3 things to do
1. Kumamoto Castle
The best known landmark of the city. The main keep is a concrete rebuild from the 1970s, but several smaller wooden buildings are original. The castle was burned after a 53 day siege in the Satsuma Rebellion. Inside the outer walls is Hosokawa Gyobu-tei, a former lord residence with a Japanese garden.
Tip: Our sources give no opening hours. Count the trip from Yatsushiro before you plan a stay at the castle.

2. Suizen-ji Joju-en
A formal garden next to Suizenji Temple, about 3 km southeast of Kumamoto Castle.
Tip: Our sources give no opening hours or walking time, so ask on the day.

3. The Shimotori and Kamitori arcades
Two shopping arcades that run for several city blocks downtown, with department stores, small shops, restaurants and bars. Local festivals are held in or near them.
Tip: Our sources give no festival dates, so do not plan around one.

What to skip
Heading for Kumamoto Port on a map
A cruise port guide says Kumamoto Port takes mainly ferries and cargo vessels. Cruise ships use Yatsushiro, so ask your ship where it ties up before you set a meeting point.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
