3. The Mikhail Lermontov wreck
A 177 metre cruise liner that sank in 1986 at Port Gore. Dive boats leave from Picton for it. Wikipedia calls it one of the largest, most accessible and most recent shipwrecks in the world.
Tip: This is for certified divers. Wikipedia says guiding is essential because divers can become disoriented inside the hull.

What to skip
Blenheim or Wellington on a short call
Blenheim is 25 km south and Wellington is 65 km west across Cook Strait. Our sources give no travel time for either, so a long trip can make you miss the ship.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
