Vigo: when your ship stops here

The white sand of the Cies Islands, a beach with a Blue Flag, and an old town built on a hill-fort.

Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Vigo is in Galicia, in the north-west of Spain, on the southern shore of the Ria de Vigo, and had 295,523 people in 2024. A cruise port guide says the Bouzas zone of the port handles passenger ships, but it gives no walking distance to the city centre, so ask your ship how far the berth is.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The Cies Islands

Three islands, Monteagudo, do Faro and San Martino, with nine beaches of fine white sand. They are part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park, created in 2002, and they partly block the way from the Ria de Vigo to the open sea. A cruise port guide gives the ferry from Vigo as 45 minutes.

Tip: The guide lists only a few ferry crossings a week, so do not count on a ferry unless your ship offers a tour.

  2. 2. Samil Beach

A beach on the city shore, pictured with the island of Toralla, and one of ten beaches awarded the Blue Flag in June 2020.

Tip: Our sources give no route from the port, so ask your ship how to get there.

  3. 3. The Casco Vello and the Castro hill

The historic centre is called the Casco Vello. The urban area is built on a hill-fort, and the page lists the Castro fortress and the Castro de Vigo ruins among the sights.

Tip: Ask at your ship's port talk where the Casco Vello is from the berth.

What to skip

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
