Messina: when your ship stops here

A rebuilt cathedral with the largest astronomical clock in the world, and Mount Etna in view to the south.

Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Messina is in the north-eastern corner of Sicily, on the western shore of the Strait of Messina, and the city proper has 216,458 people. A cruise port guide says the cruise terminal is in the heart of the city, that the Piazza del Duomo is within easy walking distance, and that taxis and rental car offices wait in front of the terminal.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The cathedral and its clock

The cathedral was consecrated in 1197. The earthquake of 28 December 1908 left only its outer walls, its Gothic doorway and an apse standing, and the bell tower was rebuilt on its old site. The tower holds an astronomical clock that the page calls the largest in the world, ordered in 1933 from Ungerer of Strasbourg.

Tip: The cathedral is on the Piazza del Duomo, so it is the easiest first walk from the terminal.

  2. 2. The Fountain of Orion

A fountain in the Piazza Duomo, the square whose buildings the 1908 earthquake also destroyed.

Tip: It shares the square with the cathedral, so you can see both on one short walk.

  3. 3. The Strait and Mount Etna

The city looks across the Strait of Messina, and from the hills above it the page says Mount Etna is clearly visible to the south.

Tip: Look south on a clear day; our sources name no special viewpoint, so ask the ship's port talk.

What to skip

  • Taormina on a short call

A cruise port guide gives the road distance as about 50 km (30 miles) by the A18 and E45 highways, and says Taormina's own main port is Giardini-Naxos. Its ancient theatre is the second largest in Sicily after Syracuse, but only book it as a ship tour with a guaranteed return.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
