Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the main city of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, an autonomous territory of Spain. A cruise port guide says the cruise terminal opened in 2016 and that downtown is less than 1 km (0.6 miles) away, with a shuttle bus to Plaza de Espana provided by the port authority and taxis at the pier.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Plaza de Espana

The largest square in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and in the Canary Islands, in the center of town. It has an artificial lake fountain by the Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron, and was built in 1929 on the site of the old Castillo de San Cristobal.

Tip: A cruise port guide says a shuttle bus links the terminal with the square. Wikipedia calls it the nerve center of the city.

  2. 2. The Auditorio de Tenerife

A concert hall by the sea designed by Santiago Calatrava, begun in 1997 and finished in 2003. Wikipedia names it among the greatest examples of contemporary architecture in the city.

Tip: Wikipedia puts the square 1.4 km (0.9 miles) north of the hall. Our sources give no walking time from the ship or opening hours.

  3. 3. Teide National Park

A national park centered on Mount Teide, at 3,718 metres (12,198 feet) the highest mountain in Spain and the highest volcano on the Atlantic islands. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and covers 18,990 hectares.

Tip: Our sources give no distance or travel time from the port, so ask your ship or a local guide. A cruise port guide also notes the Anaga Mountains, on the northeastern side, are a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

What to skip

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
