Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.
Napier is a city on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, with 64,695 people at the 2023 census. A cruise port guide says the port can handle five cruise ships at once and that its newest berth, Te Whiti Wharf (Wharf 6), opened in 2023. Our sources give no distance or walking time from the port to the city center, so ask on board how you will get into town.

Top 3 things to do
1. The Art Deco city center
On 3 February 1931 an earthquake flattened most of Napier and killed 256 people in Napier and nearby Hastings. The city center was rebuilt in the 1930s in Art Deco style, and has been protected and restored since the 1990s.
Tip: The Art Deco Festival is held every February, so a call in that month may be busy.

2. Marine Parade
A tree-lined ocean boulevard with fountains, gardens, mini golf and statues. A cruise port guide names the Pania of the Reef statue among the sights.
Tip: Our sources give no length, so walk as far as the call allows.

3. The National Aquarium
At the south end of Marine Parade. Wikipedia calls it one of the foremost aquariums in New Zealand.

What to skip
Counting on a walk from the pier
Our sources give no distance from the pier to town. Ask on board whether there is a shuttle before you head off on foot.
Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
