Toulon: when your ship stops here

A pedestrian old town with a morning market, a mountain with a cable car, and a navy museum.

Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Toulon is a city in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region of southeastern France, with 179,116 people in 2023, and it is the main base of the French Navy. There are two cruise docks: one in the city center and one at La Seyne-sur-Mer, 5 km (3 miles) across the bay and about 7 km (4 miles) by road. The cruise port guide we read is not clear about which ships use which, so check your ship's berth.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The old town and its Provencal market

A pedestrian area between the port, the Boulevard de Strasbourg and the Cours Lafayette, with narrow streets, small squares and many fountains. Toulon Cathedral is there. The Provencal market with local products is held every morning on the Cours Lafayette.

Tip: It is a morning market. Our sources give no closing time, so go early.

  2. 2. Mont Faron by cable car

A mountain of 584 m (1,916 feet) that looks down on the city. At the top is a memorial to the 1944 Allied landings in Provence (Operation Dragoon) and the liberation of Toulon. Near the summit there is also a zoo of 1.5 hectares.

Tip: A cable car runs up from Toulon. Our sources give no ride time or hours, so check before you go.

  3. 3. The National Navy Museum

The Musee national de la Marine, founded in 1814, sits on the west side of the old port behind the former gate of the Arsenal, built in 1738. It traces Toulon's history as a port of the French Navy, with large 18th century ship models and models of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.

Tip: Our sources give no opening hours. It is one of the few port buildings that survived the bombing of World War II.

What to skip

  • Assuming you dock in the city center

The center dock takes only a few smaller ships at a time, and a cruise port guide says extra ships anchor in the bay. The La Seyne dock is a walk of about 20 minutes from the town center, with a bus (line 81) from the terminal.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
