St. Kitts: when your ship stops here

A walkable capital beside the pier, a hilltop fortress, and a train ride round the island.

Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Ships tie up at Port Zante in Basseterre, the capital, on 15 acres (61,000 square metres) of land reclaimed from the sea in 1995 and used only by cruise ships. A cruise port guide says the National Museum, The Circus and Independence Square can be reached on foot without a shuttle.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The Circus and Independence Square

The Circus was modelled on Piccadilly Circus in London, and its fountain was built in 1883 and dedicated to Thomas Berkeley Hardtman Berkeley. Independence Square, once called Pall Mall Square, holds the cathedral, the courthouse and most of the older buildings.

Tip: A cruise port guide puts the landmarks within a 10 to 15 minute walk and a self-guided walk at about 1.7 km (1.1 miles), roughly 30 minutes of walking.

  2. 2. Brimstone Hill Fortress

A fortress on a steeply sloping hill, 972 feet high, on the west coast. Cannon were first mounted there in 1689, and by 1780 it was thought impregnable and called the Gibraltar of the Caribbean. It is a World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1999, and its Fort George Citadel holds a museum.

Tip: A cruise port guide puts it about 17 km (10.6 miles) north west of Basseterre and says it cannot be reached easily on foot or by city bus. The climb up from the car park is steep.

  3. 3. The Scenic Railway

A line that began as a sugar cane railway and has run tourist trains since 28 January 2003. The cars are double-decked, with an open-air upper deck, and the train crosses several historic bridges.

Tip: A cruise port guide describes a 3 hour train tour and says schedules and seats are limited, so book it as a confirmed excursion rather than on the day.

What to skip

  • Nevis on a short call

Passenger ferries to Nevis leave from the Basseterre waterfront near Port Zante, but the cruise port guide says the crossing time, how often the ferries run and the way on across Nevis all have to be checked for your day. Without those you can lose your day to the ferry timetable.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
