Prince Rupert: when your ship stops here

A cedar longhouse museum, an old salmon cannery, and grizzly bear country up the coast.

Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Prince Rupert is a port city on Kaien Island on the North Coast of British Columbia, near the Alaskan panhandle, with 12,300 people in 2021. Wikipedia says many cruise ships stop here in summer on the way between Alaska and Seattle, and that a new cruise dock opened in 2004. The cruise port guide we read gives no walking distance from the dock to town.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Museum of Northern British Columbia

A museum in a large cedar longhouse, founded in 1924, that shows the culture and history of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, with an emphasis on the Tsimshian, Haida, Kwakwaka'wakw and Tlingit nations.

Tip: Our sources give no opening hours or walking time from the ship, so check on the day.

  2. 2. North Pacific Cannery

A salmon cannery near Port Edward, founded in 1889, that stopped canning salmon in 1968 and closed in 1981. Now a museum, it has 25 buildings that can be toured, among them a canning loft, bunk houses and a mess house that is now a small cafe. Port Edward is 15 km (9.3 miles) south of Prince Rupert.

Tip: Our sources do not say how to get there or how long it takes, so ask your ship or a local driver before you plan it around all aboard.

  3. 3. Khutzeymateen Grizzly Sanctuary

A provincial park 37 km (23 miles) northeast of Prince Rupert, set up in 1994 to protect grizzly bear habitat. Wikipedia says Prince Rupert is the starting point for wildlife trips to see whales, eagles, salmon and grizzly bears, and that the sanctuary has one of the densest grizzly populations left in North America. Tours go by water, by float plane or by land.

Tip: Our sources give no trip lengths, so ask the tour company when the trip gets back before you book.

What to skip

  • Leaving the rain jacket on board

Wikipedia calls Prince Rupert the wettest city in Canada, with some rain or snow on about 240 days a year, and says summers are milder and comparatively less rainy.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
