A World Heritage old town and garrison, a bay with wrecks to dive, and a cave you ride through by tram.
Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.
Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados and its deep water harbour is the main port for cruise ships. A cruise port guide says it is about a 15 minute walk to the city along the boardwalk (another passage on the same page says 20 to 30 minutes to reach the historic shopping and waterfront area), or a taxi ride of about 5 minutes.

Top 3 things to do
1. Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison
UNESCO listed Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison as a World Heritage Site on 25 June 2011. In town, the Parliament Buildings house the third oldest continuous parliament in the British Commonwealth, just north of Heroes Square, and Broad Street is the main street and the centre of the shopping.
Tip: The cruise port guide plans a self-guided walk of 4 to 5 km (2.5 to 3.1 miles) round trip from the port gate, 60 to 90 minutes of walking.

2. Carlisle Bay
A small natural harbour on the south west coast, with the capital on its shore. The British ship Cornwallis was torpedoed there in the Second World War, anchors and cannonballs from old ships lie on the bottom, and the marine park is a popular place to scuba dive.
Tip: The cruise port guide allows 10 to 20 minutes by taxi each way in ordinary traffic, or 40 to 60 minutes on foot from the port gate.

3. The Careenage and the Garrison museum
The Careenage is a marina on the Constitution River that splits the city in two and runs into Carlisle Bay. The Barbados Museum and Historical Society is in the old military prison at St. Ann's Garrison.
Tip: The Garrison Savannah is listed as a landmark; Wikipedia gives no times, so check what is open on your day.

What to skip
Harrison's Cave on a short call
The cave is in the central uplands, 700 feet (210 m) above sea level, and you see it from a tram. The cruise port guide allows 3 to 4 hours overall for a cave visit once travel and check-in are counted, which is most of a short day in port.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
