Saint John: when your ship stops here

Tides that turn a river around, Canada's oldest farmers market, and a big nature park on the west side.

Saint John is a seaport city on the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, Canada, and Canada's oldest incorporated city, with 69,895 people in 2021. A cruise port guide names the Marco Polo Cruise Terminal as the cruise dock and gives no walking distance from it to the city center.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The Reversing Falls

The tide in the Bay of Fundy rises and falls about 8 metres (28 feet) at Saint John. At every high tide, ocean water is pushed through a narrow gorge in the middle of the city and forces the Saint John River to run backwards for several hours. Wikipedia points out that the falls are really an area of strong rapids.

Tip: What you see depends on the tide. Our sources give no tide times or distance from the cruise dock, so ask your ship or the tourist office before you plan around it.

  2. 2. Saint John City Market

The oldest continuously operated farmers market in Canada, with a charter dating from 1785, at 47 Charlotte Street. The building was finished in 1876, and its wooden roof looks like an upside down ship's keel. It was named a National Historic Site of Canada in 1986.

Tip: Look up when you walk in. Our sources give no opening hours or walking time from the ship, so check the day you sail.

  3. 3. Irving Nature Park

A park of 600 acres (240 hectares) on the west side of the city.

Tip: Our sources give no trail lengths, hours or travel time from the cruise dock, so ask locally before you head out.

What to skip

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
