Raiatea: when your ship stops here
A World Heritage temple site, a river you can travel by boat, and a quiet lagoon.

Raiatea is an island in the Leeward Islands of French Polynesia, about 12,500 people, with the town of Uturoa as its main town. A cruise port guide says cruise ships dock at Uturoa on the northeastern coast. Wikipedia calls the island quieter and less developed for tourism than Tahiti or Bora Bora, and a small road runs around the whole island.

Top 3 things to do
1. Taputapuatea marae
A temple site on the southeast coast, set up by 1000 AD, that was the political and religious center of eastern Polynesia for several centuries. UNESCO put it on the World Heritage List in 2017. Its largest platform, built in the early 17th century, uses huge upright limestone slabs. Missionaries destroyed it in 1828, and parts have been restored.
Tip: Wikipedia calls it the main attraction. Our sources give no distance or drive time from Uturoa, so book a tour that states its timing.

2. Faaroa Bay and the Apoomau River
The Apoomau River runs east into Faaroa Bay, and Wikipedia calls it the only navigable river in Polynesia. Depending on the water level, boats can travel a few kilometers up it.
Tip: Our sources do not name an operator or a trip length, so ask before you book.

3. The lagoon and Motu Ofetaro
A cruise port guide lists boat tours from Uturoa to Motu Ofetaro, an island in the Raiatea Lagoon that is popular for snorkeling. Wikipedia adds that Uturoa has a botanical garden.
Tip: The garden is the easy one for a short call, since it is in the town where the ship docks.

What to skip
Looking for the tiare apetahi flower
Wikipedia says this fragrant shrub grows only on the Temehani Plateau and is critically endangered. Our sources say nothing about visiting it, so it is not a stop to plan around.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
