Castries, St. Lucia: when your ship stops here

A harbour capital with a square, a cathedral and a hilltop fort, and the long road south to the Pitons and a drive-in volcano.

Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Ships dock at Pointe Seraphine, on the north side of the harbour. A cruise port guide describes it as the larger complex, with duty-free shops, tour desks and taxis beside the ship, and says downtown Castries is about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) away, normally a 20 minute walk along the harbour road. A second terminal, La Place Carenage, is directly beside central Castries.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Derek Walcott Square, the cathedral and the market

The square was called Columbus Square until it was renamed for Derek Walcott, the island's Nobel Prize winning poet. The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is one of the city's main landmarks, and Castries Market is another.

Tip: Start at the square and keep the cathedral and the market for the walk back to the ship.

  2. 2. Fort Charlotte on Morne Fortune

The fort is at the top of Morne Fortune, a hill about 258 m (845 feet) high, and the hill is a vantage point for a panorama of the port.

Tip: It is a hill above the harbour, so take a taxi up and, if you like, walk back down.

  3. 3. Soufriere, the Pitons and Sulphur Springs

Gros Piton (798 m) and Petit Piton (743 m) are two volcanic plugs on the south west coast and a World Heritage Site since 2004. Near the town of Soufriere, Sulphur Springs sits inside the caldera of the dormant Qualibou volcano and is marketed as a drive-through volcano; its most recent recorded eruption was a minor explosion in 1766.

Tip: A cruise port guide says the drive from Castries takes around 1.5 hours each way and can take longer in traffic, and recommends an organised excursion because of the distance, winding roads and traffic.

What to skip

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
