Bonaire: when your ship stops here

An old harbour fort, a marine park for snorkelers, and an island of flamingos and salt pans.

Bonaire is an island in the Caribbean Netherlands, about 80 km off Venezuela, and its capital and port is Kralendijk, with 10,620 people in 2017. A cruise port guide says ships berth alongside in the city center and you can walk the waterfront promenade to the main street.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Fort Oranje and the old town walk

Fort Oranje was built in 1639 to defend the main harbour, and it never saw action. Its cannons date from 1808 to 1812. Nearby, the Government Office Building was built in 1837 as the governor's home, and a walking tour brochure lists about 25 sites.

Tip: The town is small and ships berth in the center, so this is the easy first walk.

  2. 2. Snorkel the Bonaire National Marine Park

Set up in 1979 and covering 2,700 hectares, from the high water line down to 60 m (about 200 feet). It has 86 public dive sites and about 60 kinds of coral on its reefs. Uninhabited Klein Bonaire, about 800 m off the west coast, is known for diving and snorkeling and is reached by water taxi or a dive operator's boat.

Tip: Look, never touch: the corals are alive.

  3. 3. Washington Slagbaai National Park

A park founded in 1969 that covers about a fifth of the island, 5,643 hectares. Mount Brandaris, the island's high point, is about 240 m, and the park has about 340 kinds of plants.

Tip: Our sources give no drive time from Kralendijk, so ask before you plan it on a short call.

What to skip

  • Walking in to the flamingo sanctuary

Bonaire is one of only four Caribbean nesting grounds for flamingos, and 2,000 to 7,000 live at the Pekelmeer sanctuary depending on the season. Wikipedia says the sanctuary is closed to people, so do not plan to walk in.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
