Ponce: when your ship stops here

A main square with a fire house museum, a hilltop castle and tower, and a boardwalk on the sea.

Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Ponce is a city on the southern coast of Puerto Rico and the most populated city outside the San Juan area. The historic downtown is about 3 miles (4.8 km) inland from the Caribbean coast, so allow for the ride from the pier. Our sources give no travel time. A cruise port guide says Royal Caribbean has used Ponce when it could not use its San Juan berth.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Plaza Las Delicias

The main square, with the Lions Fountain, the Ponce Cathedral and Parque de Bombas, an old fire house now a museum that is an iconic symbol of the city. Ponce City Hall, from the 1840s, is the oldest colonial building in the city.

Tip: Our sources give no opening hours for the museum or the cathedral, so check on the day.

  2. 2. Castillo Serralles and the Cruceta del Vigia

Just north of downtown, a castle that gets nearly 100,000 visitors a year, and a 100 foot (30 m) tower that looks over the city. The hill was used by scouts to watch for ships, and the American troops of 1898 were first spotted from there.

Tip: Our sources give no distance from the square or opening hours, so ask for the best way up.

  3. 3. Paseo Tablado La Guancha

A boardwalk on the sea shore with food and drink kiosks, an open air stage and a marina. From its tower you can see Cardona Island Light. A boat ride of 45 minutes goes to Caja de Muertos island, which has beaches and an 1887 lighthouse.

Tip: Our sources give no boat times, so check them against the all aboard time.

What to skip

  • Tibes and Hacienda Buena Vista on a short call

Wikipedia places both in the outskirts of the city and gives no distance or travel time from the port. The Tibes site holds the oldest cemetery found in the Antilles, and Hacienda Buena Vista is a restored coffee estate, but neither is a safe plan on a short call.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
