Zadar: when your ship stops here
A sea powered organ, a round church from the 9th century, and Venetian walls.
Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.
Zadar is the seat of Zadar County in Dalmatia, Croatia, with 70,779 people at the 2021 census, and Wikipedia calls it the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia. A cruise port guide says most ships dock at Travel Port Gazenica. It gives no distance to the old town, no walking time and no shuttle details, so ask your cruise line how far the berth is from the center.

Top 3 things to do
1. The Sea Organ
An instrument opened to the public on 15 April 2005, made by the architect Nikola Basic. It plays music from sea waves and hidden tubes under a set of large white marble steps, and the sounds are somewhat random but harmonic.
Tip: It is on the waterfront in Zadar. Our sources give no distance from the ship.

2. The Church of St. Donatus
A round church, 27 metres tall, supposed to have been completed in the 9th century in the pre-Romanesque style. It was built on the Roman forum with materials from older Roman buildings. Today it is a concert venue for the International Festival of Medieval Renaissance Music, chosen for its acoustics.
Tip: Our sources give no opening hours for visits, so check on the day.
3. The Venetian walls and the Land Gate
The fortified city is part of the Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries, which joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017. The Land Gate (Kopnena vrata) has the Lion of Saint Mark above it, a symbol of the Republic of Venice.
Tip: Our sources give no walking time from the ship to the gate.

What to skip
Krka National Park on a short call
The park covers 109 square km along the Krka River and was proclaimed in 1985. A cruise port guide says cruise guests are offered guided bus tours there, but neither source gives a distance or drive time from Zadar, and Wikipedia puts it a few kilometers northeast of the city of Sibenik. Only go with a tour that returns you to the ship.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
