Kotor: when your ship stops here

A walled medieval old town under a mountain, a cathedral from 1166, and an island made by hand.

Kotor is a town on the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, with 13,347 people. Its old port is surrounded by walls built when it was ruled by Venice, and Wikipedia says many visitors have come by cruise ship since the early 2000s. The sources we read do not say where ships dock or how far the dock is from the old town.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The old town and the city walls

One of the best preserved medieval old towns on the Adriatic, on a triangle of land between the bay, the Skurda river and the mountain of St. John. It is a World Heritage Site, and the walls run for 4.5 km (3 miles) directly above the town.

Tip: Our sources give no climbing times or step counts for the walls. Choose a stretch, not the whole length, and keep to the all aboard time.

  2. 2. The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon

A Roman Catholic cathedral in the old town, consecrated on 19 June 1166 and dedicated to Saint Tryphon, the patron and protector of the city. It is one of two Roman Catholic cathedrals in Montenegro.

Tip: Our sources give no opening hours.

  3. 3. Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks

Perast is a town a few kilometres northwest of Kotor, known for two islets off its coast. Our Lady of the Rocks is an artificial island, made of rocks and old ships loaded with rocks and sunk, with a church, a museum and a small gift shop.

Tip: Our sources give no travel time or boat schedule, so ask your ship before you plan it.

What to skip

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
