Sydney, Nova Scotia: when your ship stops here

The big fiddle on the waterfront, a rebuilt French fortress, and Bell's Cape Breton home.

Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Sydney is a city on the east coast of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada, on Sydney Harbour. It was founded in 1785 and was the island's colonial capital until 1820. This is Sydney in Canada, not the Australian city. A cruise port guide says the port has a second cruise berth, 287 metres (942 feet) long, built to take bigger ships, and gives no distance from the berth to town.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
