Ishigaki is an island city in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, the business and transport center of the Yaeyama Islands, with about 50,000 people. It lies about 411 km (255 miles) southwest of the main island of Okinawa. A cruise port guide says ships call at Ishigaki, the port town on the southern coast, and gives no distance from the ship to town.

Top 3 things to do
1. Kabira Bay
A bay on the north coast of Ishigaki Island, known for white sand, turquoise water and thick green plants. It is part of Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, and with Mount Omoto it is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty. Black pearls are grown in the bay.
Tip: The bay is on the north coast and the ship is on the south coast, so it is a trip across the island. Our sources give no travel time or boat trip details.

2. Mount Omoto
At 525.5 metres (1,724 feet) it is the tallest mountain in Okinawa Prefecture. It stands near the middle of the Omoto Mountain Range, which runs east to west along the north coast of the island, and its rivers are a main source of drinking and farm water for the island.
Tip: Our sources give no trail details, so ask locally before you plan to climb.

3. Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park
A national park on and around the Yaeyama Islands. It began in 1972 and grew in August 2007 to include Ishigaki Island. Much of the island and the sea around it is inside the park.
Tip: The park is famous as the home of the Iriomote wild cat. Our sources give no visitor details, so follow any posted rules.

What to skip
Trying to see the north coast and the town in one call
The island covers 222 square km (86 square miles). Kabira Bay and Mount Omoto are on the north, the port town is on the south, and our sources give no travel times, so pick one or the other.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
