Noumea: when your ship stops here
A Kanak cultural centre by Renzo Piano, a cast iron lighthouse on an island, and a market at the terminal.

Noumea is the capital and largest city of New Caledonia, with 85,976 people in the commune at the April 2025 census. A cruise port guide says ships dock at the cruise terminal at Moselle Marina, which can berth only one liner at a time, and that Place des Cocotiers (Coconut Square) in the downtown is a 5 minute walk from it.

Top 3 things to do
1. The Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre
A centre that celebrates the culture of the Kanak people, the indigenous people of New Caledonia. It was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and opened in 1998. Its ten hut-like pavilions stand in three clusters, and the largest is 28 m (92 feet) high. It is about 8 km (5 miles) north-east of the historic centre.
Tip: A cruise port guide says there are no taxi ranks at the terminal and taxis come by phone order, so ask the information centre to call one.

2. The Amedee Lighthouse
An iron lighthouse 56 m (184 feet) tall with 247 steps, first lit on 15 November 1865. It stands on Amedee Island, about 24 km (15 miles) from Noumea, and the page calls it a very popular tourist attraction.
Tip: Our sources do not say how to get to the island, so go only on a ship tour with a guaranteed return.

3. The market at the terminal and Coconut Square
An outdoor handcraft market surrounds the terminal building, and the terminal area has an information centre with free city maps. Place des Cocotiers, the downtown square, is a 5 minute walk away.
Tip: Pick up the free city map before you walk into town.
What to skip
Waiting for a free shuttle bus
A cruise port guide says the free shuttles run only when two ships are in port, to carry the second ship's guests from the container terminal. Do not count on one, since the downtown is a short walk from the cruise terminal.
Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
