Casablanca is Morocco's port city on the Atlantic. Cruise ships tie up at the cruise terminal on the Jetée Moulay Youssef, run by Global Ports Holding since 2024, about 1 km from the city centre.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The Hassan II Mosque

Built from 1986 to 1993 on a point over the Atlantic, with part of it standing over the water, between the harbour and the El Hank lighthouse. Its minaret is 210 m (689 feet), the second tallest in the world, and it holds 25,000 people inside and 80,000 more in its courts. Visitors go in on a guided visit at set times: Saturday to Thursday at 8, 9, 10 and 11 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon; Friday at 8, 9 and 10 in the morning and 2.

Tip: Shoulders and chest covered, below the knee: the mosque bans shorts and sleeveless tops. Shoes come off at the door and go in a bag they give you.

  2. 2. The old medina

The old walled town beside the port, the Casablanca that was there before the French planned their new city outside its walls under the protectorate; the governor Lyautey had his residence inside it.

Tip: The terminal is about 1 km from the centre, and a cruise port guide reports free port shuttle buses to the city centre on ship days; ask on board where it drops you and when the last bus goes back.

  3. 3. The Habous quarter

A neighbourhood built from 1916, in the first years of the French protectorate, in the style of an old medina with narrow streets, arcades and bookshops; its Mosque of Sultan Muhammad Bin Yusuf dates from 1934 to 1936 and the Mahkamat al-Pasha courthouse from 1941 to 1942. The name comes from the word for a religious endowment.

Tip: Photographers come for the narrow streets and arches; the quarter also holds the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, so dress and act as you would at a mosque.

What to skip

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
