Gran Canaria is a Canary Island of 1,560 square km (600 square miles) with 862,893 people (2023), and its capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is the largest city in the Canary Islands. A cruise port guide says ships dock at Muelle Santa Catalina in Las Palmas, a terminal that can berth four cruise ships at once. It is a 10 minute walk from Parque Santa Catalina and a 15 minute walk from Las Canteras beach. Vegueta and Triana, where many landmarks are, are best reached by bus or taxi, and the guide gives no distance.

Top 3 things to do
1. Vegueta, the old quarter
The original settlement of Las Palmas, founded by Juan Rejon on 24 June 1478, is today the district of Vegueta. The Casa de Colon museum there is named after Columbus, who is said to have been in one of its houses on his first trip to America in 1492, and it has 13 permanent exhibition halls.

2. Las Canteras beach
The main city beach of Las Palmas, 3,100 metres (3,400 yards) of fine golden sand. A natural sandstone reef called La Barra runs parallel to the shore about 200 metres out, which cuts the waves and keeps the swimming relatively calm.
Tip: A cruise port guide calls it just a 15 minute walk from the cruise port.

3. Roque Nublo
A volcanic rock 80 metres (262 feet) tall, whose top is 1,813 metres (5,948 feet) above sea level. It stands in the Nublo Rural Park near the center of the island, in the Tejeda municipality.
Tip: It is in the middle of the island, and our sources give no travel time from the port, so book a tour that returns you to the ship.
What to skip
Maspalomas Dunes on a short call
The dunes cover 404 hectares (1,000 acres) on the south coast and have been a nature reserve since 1987. The ship is in Las Palmas, our sources give no distance or drive time to the dunes, so only go with a tour that returns you in time.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
