Cairns: when your ship stops here

The gateway to the reef, a rainforest train to Kuranda, and a big swimming lagoon on the waterfront.

Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Cairns is a city on the tropical northeast coast of Queensland, Australia, with 169,312 people (2021 census). A cruise port guide says larger ships cannot enter the port and anchor in Trinity Bay, then tender passengers to Yorkeys Knob, about 15 km (9.3 miles) by road from central Cairns, normally 20 to 30 minutes once ashore. Smaller ships dock at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal, a short walk from downtown.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The Great Barrier Reef

Cairns is known as the gateway to the reef, with daily reef boats. A cruise port guide puts the Reef Fleet Terminal, where many reef and island boats leave, about 1 km (0.6 miles) from the city cruise terminal.

Tip: A cruise port guide says to book a reef trip only after checking that its times fit the ship timetable. It also warns that tendering to Yorkeys Knob cuts the time you have.

  2. 2. The rainforest train to Kuranda

A cruise port guide describes taking the rainforest train up to Kuranda and coming back by Skyrail, which skims over the treetops. Wikipedia lists the Cairns to Kuranda railway line as a heritage site.

Tip: A cruise port guide says you need a vehicle to reach the Skyrail Smithfield terminal. Our sources give no travel or ride times, so book only a tour that fits the all aboard time.

  3. 3. The Esplanade Lagoon

A 4,800 square metre swimming lagoon on the Cairns Esplanade with barbecue areas beside it, opened in March 2003. A cruise port guide says the lagoon, shops and galleries are practical on foot from the city terminal, about 10 to 15 minutes.

Tip: This one suits a call at the city terminal. From Yorkeys Knob it needs a transfer first.

What to skip

  • Counting on a free shuttle from Yorkeys Knob

A cruise port guide says not to assume a free city shuttle will run, and to check your cruise line for the tender landing, transfers and the last return service.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
