Limassol: when your ship stops here

A castle by the old harbor, an ancient Greek city on a cliff, and a Crusader keep.

Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Limassol is a city on the southern coast of Cyprus and the most populated municipality on the island, with 108,105 people. A cruise port guide says ships dock at Limassol New Port, about 5 km (3 miles) north of downtown, that the cruise company usually runs a shuttle bus, and that there is a taxi rank at the terminal. It adds that driving in Cyprus is on the left side of the road.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Limassol Castle

A castle in the historic center, near the Old Port. The castle you see was rebuilt around 1590 under Ottoman rule, on top of the remains of an early Christian church and a Byzantine building. By tradition, King Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre here in 1191.

Tip: Wikipedia writes the 1191 wedding as tradition, so treat it as a story. Our sources give no opening hours.

  2. 2. Kourion, an ancient Greek city

A city-state on the southwest coast, founded by Greek settlers in the twelfth century BCE. Its high ground sits on a limestone promontory nearly 100 metres (330 feet) above Episkopi Bay, 13 km (8 miles) west of Limassol.

Tip: A cruise port guide says Kourion is less than a 30 minute drive from Limassol. Our sources give no opening hours.

  3. 3. Kolossi Castle

A former Crusader stronghold 14 km (9 miles) west of Limassol. The present keep was built in 1454 by the Knights Hospitaller, has three storeys and stands 21 metres (69 feet) high. The area is known for Commandaria, a sweet wine thought to be the oldest continually produced named wine in the world.

Tip: A cruise port guide also puts it within a 30 minute drive. Our sources give no opening hours or tasting details.

What to skip

  • Paphos on a short call

A cruise port guide puts the Paphos Archaeological Park about 50 km (30 miles) from Limassol, a drive of about 1 hour, with Roman villas and mosaic floors. The castles and the ancient city above are all within about 30 minutes, so a short call goes further there.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
