Le Havre: when your ship stops here

A city rebuilt in concrete and listed by UNESCO, an art museum, and a painted old port nearby.

Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Le Havre is a major port city in Normandy, northern France, on the English Channel at the mouth of the Seine. A cruise port guide calls it the cruise port for Paris, puts the cruise terminal about 2.3 km (1.5 miles) from downtown, a walk of about 20 to 30 minutes, and says walking through the port is sometimes not allowed, so check with the ship. Shuttle buses run from the terminal to the town.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The rebuilt city center

After the bombing of 1944 the center was rebuilt in concrete to plans by Auguste Perret, between 1945 and 1964, and UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site on 15 July 2005. Perret himself designed the City Hall and the Church of Saint Joseph, which is 107 metres (351 feet) high.

Tip: Just look up as you walk in from the terminal. Our sources give no opening hours for the church.

  2. 2. The André Malraux Modern Art Museum

Wikipedia says this museum is second in France for the number of impressionist paintings.

Tip: Our sources give no opening hours or walking time from the ship, so check on the day.

  3. 3. Honfleur, across the river mouth

A town known for its old port, with houses with slate covered fronts that artists painted, including Monet. Its Sainte-Catherine church has a bell tower separate from the main building and is the largest wooden church in France.

Tip: A cruise port guide puts Honfleur 20 km (13 miles) from Le Havre, about 30 minutes by car or taxi, and says renting a car at the terminal is common for it.

What to skip

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
