Sasebo: when your ship stops here

A theme park built like a Dutch town, a district with 400 years of pottery, and a naval port with a long history.

Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Sasebo is the second largest city in Nagasaki Prefecture, after Nagasaki, with 230,873 people in April 2024. Royal Caribbean's schedule lists two Sasebo stops, Sasebo (Uragashira) and Sasebo (Miura), and our sources do not say which berth is which or how far each is from the center, so ask on board.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Huis Ten Bosch

A theme park of life-sized copies of old Dutch buildings, opened on 25 March 1992 on Hario Island, about 12 km southeast of Sasebo. It covers about 152 hectares and began with 6 km (3.7 miles) of canals.

Tip: It is outside the city, so ask on board how to get there and back before the all aboard time.

  2. 2. Mikawachi pottery

Wikipedia says the Mikawachi district has a pottery industry that is 400 years old.

Tip: Our sources give no shop names or opening hours. Ask a local near the port.

  3. 3. The naval port

Sasebo Naval District was founded in 1886. It was a major navy port in the First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War, and part of it is now U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo.

Tip: Our sources do not say what visitors may see, so do not count on a visit to the base.

What to skip

  • Counting on one big sight in the city

Wikipedia says shipbuilding dominates the local economy, and the sights our sources name are outside the city center. Pick one and keep your all aboard time in view.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
