Papeete: when your ship stops here

A busy market, a palace copy and a waterfront park, all by the harbor on the island of Tahiti.

Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia, on the island of Tahiti, with 26,654 residents at the 2022 census. A cruise port guide says the cruise terminal is in Papeete Harbor and can berth four ships at once, with the Tahiti Tourism Office right next to it for city tours and excursions. It also says downtown streets are very congested.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The Papeete Market

An extensive market place in the capital. Wikipedia says it sells fruit, vegetables, fish, oils, handicrafts such as hats and handbags, local textiles, and handcrafted items such as shell necklaces.

Tip: Our sources give no opening hours and no walking time from the terminal, so ask at the Tourism Office beside the ship.

  2. 2. The Town Hall and the Territorial Assembly

The Town Hall is a replica of the Royal Palace of Papeete, which was torn down in the 1960s. The Territorial Assembly is the heart of the Polynesian government and stands on the site of Queen Pomare IV's royal residence and palace.

Tip: Both are named on the Wikipedia page with no visiting details, so treat them as a look from the street.

  3. 3. Bougainville Park

A park in town, once called Albert Park and now named for Louis Antoine de Bougainville, whom Wikipedia calls the first French explorer to sail around the world.

Tip: Wikipedia also lists a waterfront esplanade and the Cathedral of Notre Dame of Papeete, with no more detail.

What to skip

  • Counting on a taxi after dark

A cruise port guide says taxis are usually not available from 8 PM to 6 AM, and that visitors usually pay up to 30 percent more at those hours. If your ship stays late, plan the way back before you leave the terminal area.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
