Cagliari: when your ship stops here
A Roman amphitheatre, a hilltop old town with a cathedral, and an 8 km city beach.

Cagliari is the capital and largest city of Sardinia, an island and autonomous region of Italy, with about 145,981 people. A cruise port guide says ships normally dock at Molo Rinascita and that a free port shuttle runs to the port entrance near Piazza Matteotti, which is about 0.8 km (0.5 miles) from the central shopping and restaurant streets. It gives no distance from the berth itself.

Top 3 things to do
1. The Roman amphitheatre
A Roman amphitheatre built in the 2nd century AD that could hold up to 8,000 spectators. It is half carved into the rock and half built in local white limestone, and its facade rose more than 20 metres. It lies west of the Castello district.
Tip: A cruise port guide suggests allowing 3 to 4 hours from the port entrance for the National Archaeological Museum and the amphitheatre together. Our sources give no opening hours.

2. Castello and its cathedral
Castello is the old fortified district on the hill, with two early 14th century white limestone towers. Its cathedral was built in the 13th century in the Pisan Romanesque style and became a cathedral in 1258. The facade you see dates from the 1930s. Inside is a 12th century pulpit by Master Guglielmo, made for Pisa Cathedral and split in two in 1669, and a crypt with 179 niches of relics.
Tip: A cruise port guide calls the way up to Castello a sustained uphill walk and recommends a taxi if you want to avoid it.

3. Poetto Beach
The main beach of Cagliari. It stretches for about 8 km (5 miles), from the Sella del Diavolo (Devil Saddle) to the coast of Quartu Sant Elena.
Tip: A cruise port guide puts it about 6 km (3.7 miles) from the port and says to allow at least 3 hours including transport, with a taxi as the easy way there.

What to skip
Nora or Barumini on a short call
A cruise port guide puts the ruins of Nora about 35 km (21.7 miles) southwest, 45 to 60 minutes each way, and Barumini about 60 km (37.3 miles) inland, 1 to 1.25 hours each way. The amphitheatre, Castello and Poetto are all much closer.
Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
