Wellington: when your ship stops here
The national museum on the waterfront, a five minute cable car ride, and a hilltop view of the whole city.

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, with 202,689 people in the city at the 2023 census. A cruise port guide says ships use three piers: Aotea Quay (the largest and the most used), Queens Wharf and the Overseas Terminal. It puts Aotea Quay less than 1.5 miles (2.5 km) from the city center, about 25 minutes on foot or 8 minutes by car or bus, and says the port authority runs a free shuttle bus between the terminal and downtown for arriving passengers.

Top 3 things to do
1. Te Papa, the national museum
New Zealand's national museum, on the Wellington waterfront, opened in 1998. Wikipedia says it has long-term exhibitions on the country's natural environment, social history and Maori culture, including the largest colossal squid specimen in the world, at 495 kg.
Tip: It is on Cable Street by the water. Our sources give no opening hours, so check them before you go.

2. The Wellington Cable Car
A funicular (a cable-hauled car on a steep track) from Lambton Quay up to Kelburn. The one way trip takes about five minutes and climbs 120 m (394 feet). At the top it stops next to the Wellington Botanic Garden, and the Cable Car Museum is in the original winding house.
Tip: The lower station is in Cable Car Lane, off Lambton Quay, which a cruise port guide puts about 1 mile (2 km) from Aotea Quay.

3. Mount Victoria
A hill of 196 m. Wikipedia says that from the top you can see most of Wellington, and that it has many walking and mountain bike tracks.
Tip: Our sources give no walking time from the piers. Take the shuttle into town first and ask there.

What to skip
Walking from Aotea Quay on a short call
The walk into the city is about 25 minutes each way, by a cruise port guide. If your ship is in for only a few hours, use the free shuttle both ways and keep the walk for the part of town you most want to see.
Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
