Bergen: when your ship stops here

Old wooden warehouses on the harbor, a funicular to a viewpoint, and a short walk from most berths.

Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Bergen is a city on the west coast of Norway, with 294,029 people on 1 January 2024. A cruise port guide says most ships dock at Skolten, a 5 minute walk along the waterfront to Bryggen, while larger ships often use Dokken, which has a free shuttle bus to the center. It says to check your berth in the ship's daily information, because assignments can change.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Bryggen

A row of old Hanseatic (German merchant league) warehouses on the east side of the harbor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Wikipedia says it now holds museums, shops, restaurants and pubs, including the Bryggens Museum and the Hanseatic Museum.

Tip: A cruise port guide puts Bryggen 0.5 to 1 km (0.3 to 0.6 miles) from most berths, usually a 5 to 15 minute walk.

  2. 2. The Floibanen funicular

A funicular that climbs 302 m (991 feet) over 848 m of track to a viewing terrace on Mount Floyen, 320 m above the sea. The ride takes 3 to 8 minutes, and Wikipedia says it runs every quarter hour during the day.

Tip: A cruise port guide says queues can be long on busy cruise days, and to allow about 1.5 to 2.5 hours for the round trip and a short walk at the top.

  3. 3. The Fish Market and the harbor

The Fish Market is by the Vagen harbor, close to Bryggen. A cruise port guide says the center of Bergen is compact, that public transport is rarely needed on a first visit, and that you can see the Fish Market, Bryggen, Bergenhus Fortress and St Mary's Church in about 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

Tip: The harbor area is mostly level, but the lanes are cobbled and the hillside streets are steep.

What to skip

  • Mount Ulriken on a short call

A cruise port guide says Mount Ulriken needs transport to the cable car and at least 3 to 4 hours. On a day with a ship, the Floibanen funicular is the viewpoint that fits.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
