The Amalfi Coast (from Salerno): when your ship stops here
The coast road to Amalfi, the hill town of Ravello, and Positano's tiled dome.
Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.
Ships on this stop call at Salerno, a city of 125,323 people in 2026, and the Amalfi Coast starts along the shore to the west. The Amalfi Drive is 40 km (25 miles) long, from Vietri sul Mare to Positano, and the coast was inscribed by UNESCO in 1997. The cruise port guide we read does not say where ships dock or give any travel times.

Top 3 things to do
1. Amalfi and its cathedral
Amalfi was an independent republic from the 7th century until 1073. Its cathedral dates to the 11th century, with a nave and two aisles divided by 20 columns. The Museum of Handmade Paper, opened in 1969, shows restored paper making machinery.

2. Ravello, high above the sea
A hill town at 350 m (1,150 feet). Villa Rufolo was built in 1270, and in 1880 Wagner took inspiration from it for the stage design of Parsifal. Villa Cimbrone is known for its Terrace of the Infinite. The Ravello Festival has run since 1953 in honour of Wagner.
Tip: It sits well above the water, so expect a climb up from the coast road.

3. Positano
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta has a dome of majolica tiles and a 13th century Byzantine icon of a black Madonna. Marina Grande is the best known beach in town, and Fornillo is the second largest.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
