Keelung: when your ship stops here

A night market, an island park and old sea forts, all a short walk from the pier, with Taipei by train.

Keelung is a major port city in northeastern Taiwan, nicknamed the Rainy Port, and the second largest seaport in Taiwan after Kaohsiung. A cruise port guide says ships dock at berths on the east and west side of the port, that downtown is about a 10 minute walk from the pier, and that most cruise line tours go to Taipei.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Miaokou Night Market

The downtown night market for entertainment, dining and shopping. A cruise port guide lists it first among the sights within about a 10 minute walk of the pier.

Tip: Our sources give no opening hours. As a night market it may be quiet on a daytime call, so check before you count on it.

  2. 2. Heping Island Park

A park on Heping Island, joined to the mainland by Heping Bridge. A cruise port guide puts it within about a 10 minute walk of the cruise pier.

Tip: Our sources do not say how long a visit takes or when the park is open, so keep your walk loose and watch the clock.

  3. 3. The old sea forts

Keelung has several historic forts, and a cruise port guide says all of them have great sea views and most sights are within about a 10 minute walk of the pier. Wikipedia lists Baimiweng Fort, Dawulun Fort and Gongzi Liao Fort among the historic structures.

Tip: Our sources do not say which forts are open or how far each is from the pier, so ask at the terminal information desk.

What to skip

  • Taipei on your own in a short call

A cruise port guide says the train from Keelung Station to Taipei Main Station takes about 50 minutes, and the station is about a 15 minute walk from the cruise terminal. That is close to two hours on trains alone, before you see anything in Taipei.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
