Osaka: when your ship stops here
A castle with a moat, a canal district of bright signs, and a city that lives for its food.
Facts checked Nov 5, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.
Osaka is the capital of Osaka Prefecture and the third most populous city in Japan, with about 2.8 million people. A cruise port guide says Kobe is the main cruise port for the area and Osaka the alternative, with guests sometimes moved by bus between the two, so check which one your ship uses. It puts Osaka about 30 km (19 miles) east of Kobe.

Top 3 things to do
1. Osaka Castle
One of Japan's most famous landmarks. Toyotomi Hideyoshi began building it in 1583. The grounds cover about 61,000 square metres (15 acres) and hold thirteen buildings the government counts as important cultural assets. The main keep looks five stories tall outside and has eight inside, and the keep you see now was built of ferroconcrete in 1931.
Tip: Our sources give no opening hours or travel time from the cruise port, so ask your ship.

2. Dotonbori
A district along the Dotonbori canal in the Namba area, once a theater district and now a busy nightlife and entertainment area known for its huge lit signs. Its best known sign is the Glico Man, a runner with both arms raised, first put up in 1935. The canal dates from 1612.
Tip: Wikipedia describes it as a nightlife area, so check your all aboard time against the hours you want to see. Our sources give none.

3. The food Osaka is known for
A cruise port guide calls Osaka a merchant port famous for its food and sake. Wikipedia quotes an old saying that people in Kyoto are ruined by spending on clothes and people in Osaka by spending on food, and names okonomiyaki (a pan-fried batter cake) and takoyaki (octopus in fried batter) among the local dishes.
Tip: Our sources name no restaurants or streets, so ask your ship or a local for a place near where you are.

What to skip
Kyoto on a short call
A cruise port guide puts Kyoto about 80 km (50 miles) from Kobe, around 1.5 hours each way. It gives no time from an Osaka berth, so a day trip needs the whole call and a margin before all aboard.
Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
