La Paz: when your ship stops here

A 5 km seafront walk, an island group for snorkeling, and a museum of whale skeletons.

Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

La Paz is the capital and largest city of Baja California Sur, Mexico, with 250,141 people at the 2020 census. Cortes founded the first settlement in 1535, and the town was named La Paz in 1596. Our sources give no distance from the ship berth to the town.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The Malecon

A road along the coast in front of the city, 5 km (3.1 miles) long, lined with bars, restaurants and shops. Wikipedia says it became the focus of tourist activity, and a bicycle lane was added in 2011.

Tip: Our sources do not say how far the Malecon is from the berth, so ask the ship how to reach it.

  2. 2. Espiritu Santo and the Sea of Cortez

A cruise port guide calls the Espiritu Santo islands, on the northeast side of La Paz Bay, the best island group in the Sea of Cortez. It lists sea kayaking, diving and snorkeling.

Tip: Our sources give no boat times or distances, so look for a ship excursion and check it fits the all aboard time.

  3. 3. The museums

The Museum of Whale and Marine Sciences shows 36 whale and dolphin skeletons. The Regional Museum of Anthropology and History opened in 1981 and has five halls, from fossils and rock art copies to the Spanish missions and modern times.

Tip: Our sources give no opening hours or distances, so ask locally.

What to skip

  • The seaside resort towns nearby

A cruise port guide says visitors also go to nearby seaside resort towns, but it gives no names, distances or times, so we cannot say whether they fit a port call.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
