Corfu: when your ship stops here

A World Heritage old town with two Venetian forts, an empress's palace and a cliff-top castle.

Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea with 99,134 people (2021), and its main town has 23,541. A cruise port guide says ships usually dock at Neo Limani, the New Port, which is also the ferry port. It says a taxi into town takes about 10 to 15 minutes and that Blue Bus line 15 links the port with San Rocco Square in town.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The Old Town and the Old Fortress

UNESCO put the Old Town of Corfu on the World Heritage List in 2007. The Old Fortress is a Venetian citadel cut off from the town by an artificial moat, and the Liston is an esplanade between the town and the citadel with many restaurants. Venice ruled Corfu from 1386 to 1797.

Tip: A cruise port guide puts a walk around the Old Town loop at about 2.5 km (1.6 miles), 45 to 60 minutes, and the fortress visit at about 60 to 90 minutes.

  2. 2. The Achilleion palace

A palace built in 1889 to 1890 for Empress Elisabeth of Austria in the village of Gastouri, about ten km south of Corfu city. It has a fresco called The Triumph of Achilles in the main hall, and the gardens hold statues of Achilles. It is now a museum.

Tip: Our sources give no travel time or opening hours for it, so book a tour that states its timing.

  3. 3. Paleokastritsa

A beach area on the northwest coast of the island, with the Angelokastro castle nearby. A cruise port guide puts it about 25 km (15.5 miles) away, 40 to 50 minutes each way, and suggests 4 to 5 hours for the trip.

Tip: The same guide says to book your return transport before you head out to Paleokastritsa or the beaches.

What to skip

  • A full day trip to Paxos and Antipaxos

A cruise port guide says full-day trips to Paxos and Antipaxos are usually too long for a standard call. It also says many shops close from about 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM, so do your shopping early.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
