Lifou is a French commune in the Loyalty Islands Province of New Caledonia, 190 km (105 nautical miles) northeast of the mainland. Wikipedia calls it a popular cruise port, with many cruises coming from Australia. The most common port of call is Easo, where ships anchor just off the island and carry passengers ashore by tender (a small boat), because they are too large for the wharf.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. Snorkeling

Wikipedia says Lifou is known for its snorkeling. The island is made of fossil coral: a raised coral atoll, an ancient lagoon slowly lifted up, with a wide flat center ringed by cliffs that were once the reef.

Tip: Our sources name no beach, so ask the ship's shore team where the snorkeling stop is on your call.

  2. 2. The tender ride to Easo

Your ship anchors off the island and a tender (a small boat) carries you in. It is part of the day, so allow for the ride both ways.

Tip: Check the tender schedule on board, and the last tender back, before you go.

  3. 3. St. Anne Chapel at Inagoj

A chapel built in 1866 at Inagoj. It dates from the years when Anglican and French Catholic missionaries worked on Lifou, before the French took over the island in 1864.

Tip: Our sources do not say how far Inagoj is from Easo, so ask before you go.

What to skip

  • Looking for a stream or a waterfall

Wikipedia says neither Lifou nor any other Loyalty Island has surface water, because the coral rock is so porous. Fresh water sits in a large reservoir reached through caves, which are important to the island's mythology. Plan the day around the sea.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
